Power and Water Corporation

Power and Water serves the Northern Territory, but not as one network. Darwin–Katherine, Alice Springs and Tennant Creek are separate systems with different obligations, so which system a site sits on changes the answer before anything else does.

What they assess

Banded by system size
Small, medium and large pathways apply, and the point at which a connection becomes negotiated differs between Darwin and the rest of the Territory.
Lodged by a licensed party
A Territory-licensed electrician, an accredited installer or the retailer completes the application, on the basis that the technical detail is unfamiliar to most customers.

Where it snags

  • The obligation follows the system, not the Territory. On the Darwin–Katherine interconnected system a generator registers with the market operator and needs commercial agreements in place; on Alice Springs and Tennant Creek the requirement is framed around load following instead. Confirm the distributor from the bill, NMI record or connection approval before relying on this page. Embedded networks, remote grids and private networks may use a different authority. The connection offer and the site-specific approval override anything general, here or on the distributor’s own site. Reviewed 2026-08-08.
